Earth Friendly Windshield Chip Repair
by
Alan
on Fri 23 Jun 2006 10:26 PM CDT
With all the talk of global warming, I got to thinking about the effect of windshield chip repair on the environment. Yeah I know, does global warming exist? Everyone has an opinion and I don't wish to debate that here. That said, here are two thoughts I have on this.
For years windshield repair supply companies have cited that windshield repair was earth friendly because there was no way to recycle a windshield. That said, each windshield that had to be replaced, rather than repaired, meant the old windshield would end up in a landfill. In at least some parts of the country, this space is at a premium. With this in mind, with each windshield that is repaired, landfill space is preserved.
But there is more to this story. Currently depending on the source, each year here in the US somewhere between 12 and 15 million windshields are replaced. Think about how a windshield is made; material is heated to thousands of degrees to make molten glass. How much energy is needed to manufacture one windshield? I don't know, but I'll bet it is no small amount. Then multiply that by 12 to 15 million. Further think about the carbon dioxide that is generated, which they say may contribute to global warming.
By regularly inspecting your windshield for chip damage (let's say each time you fuel) and repairing the chips when you find them, you may be doing more than saving money and improving the safety of your car. You may be helping the environment.

Louisiana Windshield Replacement & Repair Regulations Dead
by

on Thu 22 Jun 2006 10:28 PM CDT
Earlier I reported that a bill sponsored by The Louisiana Speaker Of The House, that regulated windshield replacement and repair. House Speaker Salter had found during an investigation that improper windshield installation was common in Louisiana. This would have made shops follow AGRSS guidelines and regulated windshield chip repair. Currently I don't know of any shops here in Oklahoma City that state they meet AGRSS.
The bill made it's way to the Louisiana Senate where opposition defeated the bill.

Windshield Repair Reflection
by
Alan
on Wed 21 Jun 2006 10:31 PM CDT
Lately I have received a number of calls requesting our windshield repair service, only to find that the chip had been repaired. Many times the complaint is the damage can be seen or that it reflects sun light.
With that said I thought it would be a good time to give some explanation for this problem. These ideas are based on my observations and what others in the business have given for this problem. However keep in mind that the main reasons for windshield repair are to prevent the windshield from cracking thus saving you money, and preserving the factory seal which experts believe is as important as seat belts; along with eliminating the risk of a leaky replacement.
-
Cleanliness - many times we find the most difficult and problem repairs are chips that are contaminated. Among other things dirt that has gotten into the chip blocks areas so the resin can't completely fill the break.
-
Resin - not all resins (that's the stuff that bonds your windshield back together) are created equal. One thought is that a resin that cures perfectly clear can not eliminate reflection. Some samples I have tried in the past, I have rejected due to severe reflection. Another thought is that while some resins may fill the chip they can't fill all the micro cracks. As a result shine or reflection can't be eliminated. Several companies are now selling tinted resins (amber, green, gray) to reduce or eliminate reflection. The idea behind this is that color absorbs light, if the light is absorbed, it can't be reflected. The problem with these is that in the impact point of a chip where the resin is the thickest and as such the impact point has the color of the tint.
-
The Angle Of The Crack - Unfortunately sometimes a crack will be at an angle that in the right light it will reflect; no matter what has been done. Yes, even we have had this on occasions.
-
Not Completely Filled - a good repair should be completely filled or at least 97 or 98 percent filled. Many times we have found that cracks have not been completely filled, or filled at all.
So what does a good repair look like? Generally the impact point looks like a water spot, the rest of the damage should be next to invisible. (If you look for it you will find it.)
The bottom line is that the vehicle owner largely controls what the final repair looks like, by simply repairing in a timely fashion and by keeping the chip clean until the area can be repaired.

Passenger Air Bags And Windshields
by
Alan
on Sat 10 Jun 2006 08:07 PM CDT
Today I had a chance to again view the importance of the windshield when the passenger side air bag deploys. Below are pictures of a car that was involved in a front end crash.

The top picture shows the condition of the vehicle. The center picture shows the deflated but deployed airbag. Note the cracked windshield, this is normal damage when a passenger side air bag deploys. Also, as you can see the windshield, which was the factory original, has remained bonded to the vehicle. Finally the lower photo again shows the deployed air bag. As you can see the windshield and airbag which are both part of the "Safety Restraint System", have worked as designed.
This is why maintaining the factory seal is so important. With news reports and investigations showing that 7 out of 10 (70%), of windshields being installed improperly, windshield chip repair enables you to maintain the factory seal. With 70% of windshields being installed incorrectly you actually have a better chance of wining at Russian roulette.
To give you an idea of the amount of force we are talking about, the Amity Observer, recently reported; "In a 30 mph crash an unbelted 160 lb, person will hit the windshield with a force of 4,800 lbs."
Many people fail to realize the importance of their windshield. The evidence clearly shows that by taking a few minutes to identify small windshield chips and repairing them in a timely fashion, that the owner may be saving his or a loved ones life in an accident.

Windshield Treatments
by
Alan
on Tue 06 Jun 2006 10:44 PM CDT
Today I was at one of my fleet accounts doing a windshield repair, when the weather began to quickly change. For anyone not familiar with this area (Oklahoma City), the saying if you don't like the weather just wait a few minutes it'll change, was very true. When I had started the windshield repair it was sunny, however I ended up finishing the job in the rain.
As I headed home to dry off, south on the Centennial Highway/I-235 the rain fell at a rapid rate. As traffic slowed and at one point stopped due to the intensity of the rain, I wondered if anyone else was able to see as clearly as I was. No, I didn't have a new set of windshield wipers, I had treated my windshield with a product called Aquapel, a few months earlier. Even though it had been awhile since the treatment, it was still performing as normal.
For anyone who has never heard of Aquapel, it is a windshield treatment, that is applied to the windshield. It is not permanent, however I can usually get about 6 months out of a treatment. What it does is make your windshield virtually non-stick. Rain just slides off, likewise bugs and ice just doesn't stick. In fact I can simply use a wet towel and remove bug splats.
A friend introduced me to RainX a few years ago and while it is a good product, the one advantage I find with Aquapel is it lasts longer. How good are these products if you drive? Well after treating my better half's windshield, I was informed after the first ice storm that her car would have a windshield treatment from then on, period.
Anyone who drives should try a windshield treatment, to improve safety and vision, from rain, to bugs, to ice or snow, it just makes driving better. Its actually kind of fun watching the rain fly off a windshield.
CAUTION: If your windshield has a chip on it, get the chip repaired before you treat your windshield. If this product enters a chip it can render the damage non-repairable, as windshield repair resin won't stick either.

Hot Weather Cracks Windshields
by
Alan
on Tue 06 Jun 2006 10:41 PM CDT
With temperatures here in Oklahoma City hovering around the century mark, windshield care is critical. Many people are under the impression that their windshield chip will only crack out when its cold.
FACT: Windshields like glass in general does not like to change temperature and extreme hot is just as bad as extreme cold. We get as many calls in the summer heat as we do with winter cold concerning a chipped windshield that has cracked out.
Things You Can Do, To Prevent A Cracked Windshield.
-
When you get a chip on your windshield get it repaired in a timely fashion, (within a few days). It is not necessary to stop on the road or highway. Yes, I have taken calls like " I just had a rock hit and chip my windshield, I'm at mile marker __ on I-40".
-
Check your windshield each time you fuel.
-
Once you have found a chip and as long as it is dry, take a piece of clear packing tape or scotch tape and place it over the damage on the outside of the windshield. This will not prevent the windshield from cracking, however it will keep it clean and dry, so the best repair can be accomplished. Do Not use masking or duct tape.
-
When possible park in the shade, or at least crack the side windows when parking to help prevent heat build up.
-
Do Not wash the vehicle.
-
Do Not apply a windshield treatment like Rain X or Aquapel, until the damage is repaired.
-
Do Not slam the doors, hood, trunk or create any other type of vibration.
Finally, if you get a chip don't stress out or commit road rage on the driver whose tire threw a stone at your windshield. Unfortunately this is normal wear and tear and can be easily repaired, unlike a bent fender from an accident. Besides your tire at some point very easily could have just zapped the windshield behind you.
